UK inflation September 2026: the numbers
If you checked a fuel receipt lately, this report won’t surprise you. UK consumer price inflation reached 3.5% in the 12 months to September 2026, the ONS said on Wednesday, October 21. That is up from 3.1% in August and, according to MoneyWeek, the highest rate since October 2025. Prices rose 0.4% in the month alone.
The figure was a little hotter than expected. FXStreet put the consensus at 3.4% for headline CPI and 2.7% for core CPI, which came in at 2.8%. “Inflation climbed notably in September to its highest annual rate in almost a year,” ONS chief economist Grant Fitzner said.
| Measure (12-month rate) | August 2026 | September 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| CPI (headline) | 3.1% | 3.5% |
| CPIH (includes owner occupiers’ housing costs) | 3.3% | 3.6% |
| Core CPI (excludes energy, food, alcohol, tobacco) | 2.6% | 2.8% |
| CPI goods | 2.7% | 3.2% |
| CPI services | 3.4% | 3.7% |
| Transport | 4.6% | 6.6% |
| Motor fuel | 23.0% | 29.8% |
| Restaurants and hotels | 4.1% | 3.8% |

Fuel is the main driver
Transport made the largest upward contribution, adding 0.94 percentage points to the CPI rate, according to the ONS. Average petrol prices were 169.5p a litre and diesel 192.5p in the ONS sample. MoneyWeek noted that diesel was at its highest since July 2022, and RAC data it cited put pump prices even higher, at 174p for petrol and 199p for diesel.
Fuel was not the only push. Communication inflation rose from 5.3% to 5.8%, and recreation and culture from 1.6% to 2.3%, with MoneyWeek pointing to airfares, computer games and live events. Services inflation also climbed, to 3.7% from 3.4%.

The side story: food and restaurants went the other way
Here is the part a headline number hides. Not every price is running hot. Food inflation stayed at 1.3%, well below the headline rate. “Food inflation surprisingly remains flat at 1.3%, significantly below CPI at 3.5%,” said Bogdan Toma, head of consumer practice at McKinsey & Company, quoted by MoneyWeek.
Restaurants and hotels were the biggest downward contributor, with that rate easing from 4.1% to 3.8%. For CPI, six divisions pushed the rate up and four pulled it down, the ONS said. So the jump is narrow and energy-led, which matters for how the Bank of England reads it.

What it means for the Bank of England on November 5
The Bank of England held Bank Rate at 3.75% on September 17 by a 6–3 vote, with three members wanting a rise to 4%. It said then that the risk of second-round effects had increased, and projected CPI of about 3.75% in the fourth quarter of 2026 and slightly above 4% in early 2027, according to an MTS Insights summary. September’s 3.5% sits on that path.
Some economists think the case is now made. “That combination means a November rate hike now looks like a done deal,” David Rees, head of global economics at Schroders, told MoneyWeek, though he expects any tightening cycle to be short-lived. Commerzbank argued the recent data give the Bank room to raise rates without adding much pressure to a weakening economy. Markets were less excited: FXStreet reported the pound slightly lower against the dollar after the release.
The counterargument is in the same report. Core inflation at 2.8% and food at 1.3% show the jump is concentrated in fuel, and a higher Bank Rate does nothing to the price of a barrel of oil. Before the November 5 decision, Chancellor John Healey also delivers his Budget on October 28, and ICAEW chief economist Suren Thiru warned it could become “a perilous high-wire act.” Thiru expects inflation near 3.8% in October and close to 4.5% after January energy bill rises.

What this means for you
Whether you live in the UK or simply hold pounds, a few choices are worth weighing. Each has a cost either way:
- Remortgaging soon: If you expect a hike on November 5, fixing now can protect you. If the Bank decides the fuel spike is temporary, you may have locked in a rate higher than you needed.
- Savers: Moneyfacts put average savings rates at about 3.8%, with 1,683 accounts beating inflation. A fixed bond now gives certainty; staying in easy access keeps you free to catch a possible rise.
- Household energy: Ofgem’s October cap rose 4% to £1,723 a year, and Cornwall Insight expects about a 16% rise in early 2027, to roughly £1,999. A fixed tariff could shield you, but only if the forecast proves right.
- Pension income: MoneyWeek reports the state pension is set to rise 3.9% under the triple lock. That is above September’s 3.5%, but below where some forecasters see inflation early next year.
